Geodes are fascinating! They are formed when a cavity is created inside of a rock. Quartz Geodes are most commonly formed in igneous rock created by cooling lava or magma. Typically this happens when a bubble of carbon dioxide and water vapor forms in flows of lava. As the rock cools and the gas dissolves, empty space is left behind within the rock. Eventually, mineral-rich water seeps through these porous rocks and fills the cavity. Over thousands of years, the water deposits layers of minerals that eventually fill the empty space with crystals.
